Located on historic Brownsville Farm, this seaside preserve near Nassawadox is the headquarters for The Nature Conservancy’s Virginia Coast Reserve. The office, which is open to the public during business hours, houses several local paintings and sculptures, as well as natural artifacts found on Virginia’s Barrier Islands. A short walk from the office, the William B. Cummings Birding & Wildlife Trail offers a round-trip hike of three miles through many of the different habitats protected on the 1250 acre preserve, including wooded uplands with their songbirds and woodpeckers, ponds and impoundments that attract a variety of waterfowl and expansive salt marsh views where you might catch a glimpse of a wide variety of herons and wading shorebirds. There are also plenty of mammals and amphibians that will surely see you, even if you don’t see them!
